DOLAUCOTHI, WELSH GOLD MINES
The earliest Welsh Gold mine. From 70 - 80 AD the Romans began mining gold in the area of the Cothi valley, Britain's mineral resources being one of the reasons for the Roman invasion. The Romans developed gold mining in the area for the next 40 to 50 years, using open cast and tunnelling techniques, and creating hydraulic systems to smash rocks to get at the ore. The mining area was also protected by a fort. Even when the Roman military left, Roman life in the area continued, with later gold finds having been discovered. Rothesay Castle - unique amongst Scottish castles for being circular, having a lengthy history that includes the earliest recorded assault on a Scottish castle by Viking forces.
Captured by Robert the Bruce in the Wars of Scottish Independence and also by Oliver Cromwell's 'New Model Army'. Home of the Stewarts / Stuarts. And still today the Dukedom of Rothesay is a title bestowed on the heir to the monarch. See on the Map-olah map: https://www.zeemaps.com/view?group=2653234&item=Rothesay_Castle_-_Scotland's_Most_Remarkable_Castle Beneath the waters of Lough Erne lay the kingdom of the Fin Bolg whose King possessed a golden apple bearing crystal tree in his pleasure garden.
Conn-Edda was given an obligatory quest to retrieve three golden apples from the tree, a black steed and a hound with supernatural powers from the underwater kingdom. Conn-edda succeeded and planted the apples which gave healing powers to the land and led to the fertility of his own kingdom. The Old Temple Kirk, may stand on the site of a previous Templar church, having been built by the Knights of St. John after the dissolution of the Templars.
This may be the site of the real 'Rosslyn' and the Templar treasure for local legend claims that the treasure was moved from Paris to here in Scotland between the 'oak and elm tree'. French legends also suggest the treasure was taken to Scotland in the vicinity of the Firth of Forth. |
